The paper examines the ways and means employed by practical healers and the sources from which they drew their knowledge. These healers were frequently distinguished for their powers of observation, their skill, usually with regard to operating on people, their sense of responsibility and their pioneeringknowledge of the actions of herbs, etc. There is a wealth of folk remedies in public libraries, monasteries and in the hands of private individuals, in which are to be found extracts from ancient and mainly Byzantine medical writers. Many examples of folk remedies apply to a wide range of illnesses. References and suggestions are to be found particularly in proverbs and in many other forms of folk literature, such as folk songs, and in Christian names and surnames.
