The archaeological work of the 17th ephorate of prehistoric and classical antiquties

This report presents 3 projects carried out by the 17th Ephorate of Prehistoricand Classical Antiquities, which illustrate another aspect of archaeologyand concern the conservation and restoration of monuments, the landscapingand refurbishing of archaeological sites, and modem museum policies.The 1st project is the structural restoration of the facade of the Tomb of theJudgement at Lefkadia, Naoussa prefecture, which had serious structural problems.The stones on the facade were removed, conserved, and replaced afterthe mortar had been consolidated. It is the first time that such an interventionhas been carried out on a burial monument; the problem of its conservation hasat last been resolved 45 years after its excavation.The 2nd project was carried out at Pella and concerned the consolidationand restoration of the walls and floors of part of the S wing of the Agora, as partof a more extensive programme of conservation, protection, and enhancementof the architectural remains. At the same time, the whole site was spruced up,new storerooms were built, and the surrounding area was landscaped.The 3rd project is the new exhibition on the ground floor of the Fiorinamuseum. It comprises 3 basic groups: the prehistoric finds from the prefecture(mainly the Armenohori mound); works of sculpture, grave and votive stelai,free-standing statues, and inscriptions, witnesses to the area’s economic prosperityin the Roman period; and a mosaic floor from a building of the Romanperiod in Kato Klines. The exhibition is accompanied by a considerable amountof supplementary material, which gives it an educational dimension, seeking tomake the visitor not merely an observer, but a participant in the archaeologist’swork.
