Excavational evidence of the Hellenistic city of Petres
Abstract:
This year the excavation concentrated in the problems concerning the spatial organization of the various functions of the city, such as the location of the cemetery, the centres of public life and the streets. The research of the fountain revealed that it is located on a main sloping winding street of the town; a narrow paved street (0.90 m. wide) was discovered in the neighbourhood of the southern plateau and an earlier pipe of stone used for water supply ran below. Big clay pipes found in the house of the southern plateau also suggest the existence of the fountain in the same area. A Street, following the winding terraces probably existed above the level of the pipe. Important remarks on the technique of the floors of the ground and first storey were carried out. The materials used for the foundation of the ground floor comprised pebbles with earth, iron-slag, roof-tiles, animal bones and sherds, all covered by a thick layer of powdered charcoal; the floors are founded in this layer and are made either of simple earth, or pebbles embedded in limeplaster. Many samples of wattle and daub plaster were found in the excavation used for the covering of the roof, recalling modern traditional Macedonian architecture. Mud-plaster covering wattle and daub recalling baskef technique structures separated the space; this evidence is based on the imprint of a fragment found in a house in the citadel of the Hellenistic city at Petres (District of Fiorina — W. Macedonia).
