Abstract:
Ten years ago an ancient cemetery was discoverd at the northeastern part of the modern town of Thermi (ex Sedes) in the vicinity of Thessaloniki. The cemetery is associated to the nearby mound («trapeza») where the settlement of the historic period is located. The nearly 1400 burials, that have been unearthed todate, are mainly dated from the iron age to the roman period. However the majority of the graves are dated to the archaic, classical and hellinistic times, thus supplying a wealth of grave-goods and information on the daily life, commercial activity, relations and burial customs of the still unknown, ancient town. The main grave types are the cist grave, the pit-grave, sarcophagi and pot burials. Cremated remains are also found in pots or buried in the ground. Presented here are the types of graves and finds in an attempt to associate distinct burial customs to different chronological periods.
