Parallel Title:
Rescue excavations at the prehistoric site “Toumba” Sykias, municipality of Toroni, prefecture of Halkidiki
Abstract:
During water drainage construction works for rain- and waste water in the modern-day settlement of Sykia (Municipality of Toroni, Prefecture of Halkidiki), antiquities were found on the outskirts of the hill in the vicinity of the well-known Prehistoric site of “Toumba”, atop which the village’s primary school was built. The total area explored did not yield any building remains apart from fill from the Prehistoric settlement of “Toumba”, and the fill was disturbed by centuries-long building activity in the area.As regards the nature of the settlement, the portable finds that came to light (a relatively large number of stonework and pottery items as well as figurines) would suggest significant manufacturing activity in the area involving cottage industries, metallurgy, and agriculture; evidence suggesting the inhabitants were involved in animal husbandry is absent. The settlement dates from the Late Neolithic and Late Bronze Age.The site has the typical features of Prehistoric settlements in the Halkidiki, and coexisted with settlements found in the greater Sykia area, including those of Kriaritsi, Koukou, and Toroni itself.
