The hellenistic city of Florina
Abstract:
The archaeological investigation of the Hellenistic city of Fiorina is nearing completion, and landscaping will start in 2000 to make the site accessible to visitors. The Hellenistic city existed for 3 centuries, from the 4th to the 1 st century BC, and is in the S part of modem Fiorina, on the terraces of a densely wooded hill. The excavated part so far covers an area of 0.8 ha. The city is laid out in insulae separated by streets intersecting at right angles, with 4-5 houses in each insula, with courtyards, cellars with storage jars in situ, hearths and facilities for processing various products, pottery kilns, and metalworking furnaces. The excavation yielded a large number of clay vessels, many of them produced by a local workshop, stamped amphora handles, and coins from various parts of Greece, which testify to extensive trading relations. The large number of loom weights shows that the inhabitants engaged in weaving, while the large quantities of stored grains and other facilities show that they also engaged in farming and various forms of home handicrafts (such as mineral processing, pottery, and koroplastics). The interventions to be made on the basis of the proposals in the approved project are limited and discreet and in accordance with the morphology of the terrain and the architectural remains. A peripheral walkway offers an overall view of the site, while smaller walkways along the ancient streets allow a closer approach to the excavated areas. A warden’s office, a few rest areas with information panels, and a small storehouse are the only structures to be built on the site. This new archaeological site in a splendid spot with a view over the entire surrounding area, together with the recently renovated museum, will be an important cultural centre in this frontier area of Greece.
