Abstract:
Internationally dominant instrumental rationality is circumscribed by a more or less harmonic coexistence and articulation between individual miximizing rational behaviour and collective organized ratiol choice. In Greece, the articulation between individual and collective values presents conspicuous particularities in comparison with most developed countries. Thus, while individual performative behaviour follows in the steps of the homo economicus archetype, behaviour towards the collectivity and the dominant forms of sociopolitical integration are still dominated by traditionally shaped values and norms. The relation between individual and society is still circumscribed by precapitalist reluctances towards any form of normative constraint. The problem of «modernization» of institutions and behaviour thus largely depends on the country’s capacity to modernize the articulation between individual and civil society, as well as the dominant sociopolitical patterns of integration. Indeed, the spectacular insistence on self-employment, the concomitant resistance against dependlabour forms, the distinct preference for public employment and the current predilection for the versatility offered by multiple employment are manifestations of an incomplete internalization of modern collective organizational forms. Within this context «free rider» behavioural patterns tend to prevail.
