The Andronikos horologium in Athens (tower of the winds) : (plans 1 - 3 )

In the past few years there has been an increased interest in the Andronikos Horologium which is situated at the Northern foot of the Acropolis in Athens. The different studies made about it concern mainly its archaeological origin and the possibility of its being an hydraulic clock.Our study concerns the eight vertical sundials which exist in the corresponding sites of the octagonal tower.Mathematical computation with an electronic computer shows that the gnomon on each side should be positioned pointing to the North Pole at theΕΙΣ ΕΠΙΓΡΑΜΑ ΕΔΕΣΣΗΣ( AAA II (1969)}σελ. 189 - 190 )Ύπό του Εφόρου Αρχαιοτήτων κ. Φ. Πέτσα εκδίδεται καί σχολιάζεται διά βραχέων έπιτύμβιον έπίγραμμα έξ Εδέσσης, πιθανώς του 3ου αίώνος μ.Χ.point of convergence of the hour lines. The sundials have been computed for each of the eight sides using latitude 38°. There is a complete agreement for the eight sides except the Eastern and Western for which the hour lines are in a different inclination than these computed. There is a possibility that these sides were used as solar calendars.The conclusions we have drawn from our study should be of interest to archaeologists who might be interested in the reconstruction of the sundials.
