Among the important acquisitions of the museum in 1971 were two hoards of ancient greek coins. The first, recovered near the Hellespont, consists of 27 small archaic electrum fractions of Asia Minor, dating from the seventh through the first quarter of the fifth cent. B.C.These coins are a part of a larger dispersed hoard of which 22 pieces were acquired by the Cabinet of Athens in 1970 (figs. 1 - 2 ).The second hoard, of 149 silver staters of Aegina, comes from the village Myrina of Karditsa ( Thessaly ). Represented are the earlier and later varieties of sea - turtles, the earlier land - turtle type, and some specimens of the so - called « pseudoaeginetan » staters. Most of the coins are counter- marked (figs. 3 - 6 ).The date of burial may be placed, preliminarily, near the beginning of the fourth cent. B.C.
