Abstract:
In 1992, a short excavation in the Garitsa neighbourhood of Corfu, in which the north cemetery of the ancient city of Corcyra is located, revealed parts of two Late Archaic rectangular grave enclosures and a large numberof burials. The burial types included simple interments beneath the ground, tile-covered tombs, and jar burials. Two burials of cremated remains were found in the second grave enclosure. Three funeral pyres were discovered at different points of the area. The grave enclosures are in the shape of the Greek letter Π and are constructed of pseu- do-isodomic masonry. They probably belonged to families of the local aristocratic elite thatemerged on the island in the 6th c. BC, and it is not impossible that they are to be identified with the ‘monuments’ at which the army of Mnasippos fortified itself during the siege of 373 BC, according to Thucydides.
