Manumission inscriptions from Aeginion (Kalabaka)

The re-examination of the small corpus of manumissions coming from the ancient Aeginion, which has been located to the today's area of Kalabaka, thanks to a local honorary inscription reveals unknown till now sides of the ancient town’s private and public life. More complete and correct readings as well as a correct re-estimation oftheir chronological order have disclosed significant details concerning the institutional, religious, language (not only in the vocabulary, but also the nominal level), in other words the cultural tradition of this town of Thessaly during the late imperial era. The new reading gives, moreover, evidence that at the same period the town appoints as general of the thessalian federal state Μνάσωνα Μνάσωνος. Finally, we strongly believe that the manumissions of Aeginion, preserved thanks to the use of its vehicles as building material during the byzantine and late byzantine period, clearly proves, once again, the very important contribution of the inscriptions to the historical research.
