Abstract:
Included in the D. Goulandris Collection is a small marble head of a bearded male, height 0.083 m. (figs, la, b, c, d) which belongs to a statuette of Herakles; a Roman copy of the well-known Severe style type of Herakles in Boston, which is attributed to Myron. This copy was probably fashioned in the 2nd half of the 2nd century A. D. and seems tohave remained half-finished. Comparisons with other copies of the same type showed that the head in the Goulandris Collection is most closely related to the head of the copy in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. It is also considered probable that Myron’s original statue was a large-scale work.
