Abstract:
In the autumn of 1969, a campaign of excavation at Ano Koufonisi, a small island between Naxos and Amorgos, revealed two EC cemeteries, with many important finds. Two complete marble figurines ( height: 0.22 m. and 0.105 m. ) of the Folded-Arm Figurine type, Spedos variety (fig. 1 ), found in situ not in a grave, but in a small hollow of the earth, and a head of a similar figurine (fig. 2, left) are the most remarkable finds of the first cemetery. Urfirnis vases of various shapes are their context (fig. 3).The second cemetery ( a large one ) yielded a lot of vases, also Urfirnis for the most part. Thus one of the excavated graves yielded, together with Urfirnis vases (figs. 4, 6), two pear- shaped jars, with conical neck and incised decoration, a fact which allows the dating of these jars, considered as belonging to the EC I period, to be later, in the EC II period. To the same burial belong a «frying pan» with incised and stamped decoration (fig. 5) and a «raking handle», like the ones from Kambos and Aghios Kosmas.Exceptional is the finding of a small stone plaque, on which there is a relief figure in the form of an idol of Louros type (fig. 7).
