Abstract:
This article presents a three-act drama by Elias Voutieridis, The Ideologue, submitted to the Stathatos Drama Contest organised in 1931 by the Society of Greek Playwrights. The only manuscript, unknown till recently, consists of 79 pages and has been located by the author at the ELIA Archive. Voutieridis (1874-1941) is mainly known as a scholar of Modern Greek Literature but he has also left us with some important poems, plays, translations, newspaper articles and literary reviews. He took an active part in Greek theatre life as a playwright, a founding member of the “Nea Skini” by Konstantinos Christomanos and a member of the Greek Playwrights Society. From 1924 onwards Voutieridis teaches at the Professional Drama School of the Greek Actors Society and in 1930-31 he becomes a member of the Board of the National Theatre. There is no evidence that The Ideologue has ever been performed or published. It is one of Voutieridis’ most powerful plays dealing with social injustice and the demand for agrarian reform in the Greek province under the influence of socialist ideas. The young man who struggles to improve the peasants’ life through modern irrigation works (“the ideologue”) dies attacked by the local rich land owner’s henchmen. Similarities of Voutieridis’ play with Ibsen’s Enemy of the People are traced here as well as with two popular folk ballads, The Bridge ofArta and The Two Brothers and the Wicked Woman. The full text of the play is published at the end of the article.
