Recent research in the prehistoric settlement at Mandalo 1985-1986
Abstract:
The prehistoric settlement is situated 1 Km NW of the village of Mandalo and approximately 20 Kms NW of classical Pella. It is a small tell site (tumba) that covers an area of 1.23 acres and has a height of 7 metres. A series of 19 calibrated datings defined an early habitation phase in the Late Neolithic (4600-4000 b.C.) and a later phase in the Early Bronze Age period (2950-2200b.C.). The 1985-6 excavations revealed that the stone construction, which was recovered in 1984, is a massive wall, running the top of the tumba in a west to rast direction. Possibly it was founded in a late neolithic level. Further investigation will throw light on the function of the wall. Two new trenches, opened on the top of the tumba, showed that the late neolithic tradition of timber construction was continued into the early bronze age. The excavations also produced a large quantity and variety of pottery and a number of small finds dated in the late neolithic and early bronze age.The rich material of the site of Mandalo offer a new cultural sequence for western Macedonia, which shows remarkable affinities with Aegean and Balkan material.
