Abstract:
A numismatic hoard, found in the area of Neneta, at Gridia, in 1959, is exhibited in the Museum of Chios. It comprises 14 drachms of Chios, one New Style tetra- drachm of Athens, two cistophoric coins of Pergamon and one roman denarius. The hoard, whose burial date has been fixed in 75 B.C., is the unique example of this period including silver coins of Greek cities along with roman denarii. However, it must be noted that in the police report accompanying the find, only 16 pieces are mentioned, the chian drachms and the athenian tetradrachm. Accordingly, it is doubtful whether the coins which lent importance to it, were actually part of it. Therefore, this hoard should be used with caution as a point of reference.
