Abstract:
Designed by the architect Lysandros Kaftanzoglou and executed by the Fytalis brothers the pulpit of St. Irene was a sensation in Athens of 1871. Its elaborated high reliefs were much criticized in connection with the old Byzantine opposition to the presence of sculptures in Orthodox churches. Besides, Dionysius Latas, a talented archimandrite, excited great attention by his eloquent preaching from this very pulpit. He represented the enlightened section of the Greek clergy and evoked a severe reaction from the conservative priests.Such «innovation» in technique and form, together with the «boldness» of sermons by Latas, caused fervent discussion about the ambo indicative of the taste and ideas of the time.
