The author proposes a thesis based on the evidence of the archaeological research and the interpretation of the scattered notes of the philological tradition. The thesis is that Boeotia was invaded or colonized during the closing years of the third millenium B.C. by Egyptians, which came by ship via Thera - Hyria ( Aulis ) to the inland and established themselves mainly at Thebes and Orchomenos, in the west fringes of the Gopais lake. The archaeological data called upon are the recently discovered Tumulus of Zethos and Amphion in Thebes and the drainage system for the desiccation of the Copais - lake. The tumulus built on an artificial terrace on the homonymous hill of Thebes, is made of sur^ried bricks (its’ core), and bears in the center the κοινόν τάφον of Zethos and Amphion ( see plans 1 - 5 ). The whole hill is artificially transformed to stepped pyramid ( see the plans). The chronology of the work and of the construction of the tumulus is given by the ceramic finds, which are the EHII period. The grave was plundered already in ancient times, but the jewels of f i g. 1escaped to give us a hint of the quality and richness at the κτερίσματα of the royal grave.The ingenious idea and the terrific work in the drainage constructions of Copais - lake, although not yet evaluated properly, can be understood only in connexion and comparison with analogous achievements reached by peoples of Middle - East and mainly Egypt. The Gopais - lake was thus turned a huge fertile plain by the Mi- nyans ( Orchomenos ), whose origin is tested now under a new perspective. Clues of Egyptian influence in Boeotia abound and some are mentioned in the present article. The author believes to exploit soon all the confirmative data of his thesis and the implications of his interpretations.
