On the drama The Martyrs of Arkadi by Timoleon Ampelas
Author:
Abstract:
Timoleon Ampelas (1850-1926), a literary author and playwright, was among those who composed works inspired by the struggle of the Greeks of Crete for freedom and union with Greece. Ampelas wrote, in free verse (which was considered a vangu ard choice for his time), the dramatic play The Martyrs of Arkadi, representing the self-sacrifice of the Greeks besieged in the Monastery of Arkadi by the Turks. The play, permeated with patriotism and heroic sentiment, has caused a great commotion when it was first presented, and is up to the present day a token of the spirit of national enthusiasm that prevailed in that period of Greek history, rich in turmoil and upheavals.
