Abstract:
Demetrios N. Darvaris (1757-1823) was an important scholar, teacher, translator and author of several educational manuals and popularizing texts, in the frame of Modern Greek Enlightenment. In his writings, Darvaris advocates for the adoption of the middle way in youngsters’ education, rejecting authoritarian methods of the past, whilst acknowledging the importance of tradition and religious faith, unlike his European counterparts who aimed at separating science from religion. Influenced by Comenius regarding his teaching methods, as well as by Jean-Jacques Rousseau in his naturalistic approach of education, Darvaris greatly contributed to the establishment, in newly liberated Greece, of an enlightened educational system, adapted to Modern Greek cultural and psychological ambience.
