Antonio Matesis’ essay on language, which is published unbridged for the first time in this volume, offers an important dimension to our understanding of the ways that Solomos’ literary circle cultivated and promoted the demotic idiom in Zante. The author’s arguments have considerable weight and shed light at the use of the Greek language in Zante during the first quarter of the 20th century, as well as at their efforts through the poets, translations and essays they had written on its codification. In addition this essay by Matesis can be considered as a parallel text to the "Dialogue" by Solomos, written during the same period and only a few years later.
