Abstract:
This work aims to resolve a bibliographic problem of some methodological interest: in 1801 one of the most important books written by the Greek orthodox monk and theologian Nicodemus the Hagiorite, the Enchiridion of Counsels, was published in Vienna. The extant copies of this book differ from each other, showing that they emanate from two type-settings, while, according to the title page, they have all been printed in 1801. According to the relevant bibliography there were two impressions of the book, and, having the differences between the errata sheets as a criterion, it is determined which impression was the first and which was the second one. In the present work, by using comparative examination of the errata, of the printing types and of the typographic ornaments, we prove that there were not two impressions but two editions of this book; the first edition was printed in 1801 in the publisher’s Franz Anton Schrämbl printinghouse, and the second edition was printed in circa 1803 in the Vendoti’s Greek printing-house. We also prove that what was considered a second impression is actually the first edition and what was considered a first impression is actually the second edition of the book.
