Abstract:
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a diagnostic term that refersto children and adults who are unable to modify attention, motoric activity and impulse controlappropriately. The article is a brief overview of the etiology, clinical presentation, neurologicaland cognitive deficits that are presumed to underlie ADHD in children. Particularattention is paid to diagnostic issues, epidemiology, comorbidity and three specific ADHDsubtypes. Studies involving structural and functional imaging are reviewed and although thepathogenesis of the disorder remains speculative, multiple systems in the brain have beenimplicated in the neurobiology of ADHD. Current research does not provide neurodiagnosticcriteria to definitively diagnose the disorder, so assessment remains focused on multifactorialetiologies.
