Abstract:
In the present study, we investigated the participation of the left and right cerebral hemispheres in the perception and comprehension of foreign and native language, using the technique of Visual Evoked Potentials(VEPs). Statistically significant (p<. 05) differences between the left (LH) and right (RH) hemispheres in the time each needed to process the verbal stimuli presented on a screen, proved a shift from RH-to-LH participation in processing the foreign language when proficiency in it increased. This was especially prominent in males, who also showed a complete LH superiority for their native language phonological skills and a RH superiority for their native language semantic skills. Females showed a more even pattern of lateralization, having a tendency to use both their cerebral hemispheres in their native and foreign language processing.
