The korai of Mantineia

From the dedications in the temple excavated in 1962 on the west slope of the main hill in the plain of Mantineia (Ptolis), certain types of Archaic female figurines have been selected for presentation here. The most predominant amongst them is the relatively rare Archaic statue type of the standing frontal Peloponnesian peplophoros kore. They are dated to the second half of the 6th c. BC and are highly important, representative original works of local art, with aspirations to monumental sculpture.Lakonian iconographie models are recognised in the earlier types, and the main distinctive stylistic features of the group are analysed. These are basically Argive and Arkadian. Other structural and typological features, of Corinthian origin and inspiration, are also traced. In the later types the distinctive features identifying the local workshop are less pronounced and are amalgamated with borrowings, sometimes of Lakonian and sometimes of direct Ionian origins.The mon umental types of the earlier figurines are thought to reproduce the formidable vegetation goddess, in whom, I suggest, should be recognised another local - specifically, Mantineian - version of the primitive Arkadian chthonic Demeter.
