The Στίχοι ψαλλόμενοι τη άγια και μεγάλη Παρασκευή, found (under different titles) in eight mss, ranging from the 15th until the 17th century, is a rather peculiar text. It is written in the versus politicus (139 vss), in the archaizing kind of Greek common in liturgical texts of the 14th century. The first part (vss 1-60) is a Lament of the Virgin, clearly belonging to the same genre as the also anonymous Θρήνος της υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου εις την σταύρωσιν του Δεσπότου Χριστού ("Παρισταμένη τω σταυρω η πάναγνος παρθένος ”), published by Μ. I. Manousakas in 1956 (and soon to be published again in a new critical edition by the author of this article). The second part, however, telling the tale of the Deposition from the Cross and the Burial (vss 61-114) and of the Resurrection (vss 115-139), does not have the form of a monologue, but
is a narrative of which the Virgin certainly is not the narrator. It rather looks like a free adaptation (in versus politici) of the Απόστιχα, sung around the Επιτάφιος during the service of Holy Friday.
