In this article, an attempt is made to investigate how we can evaluate the style of a speech, made to Socrates the Sophist Protagoras (Protagoras 316c317c) through the rules that Aristotle formulate for the Rhetorical Art. We believe that Protagoras knows the rules governing the construction of a rhetorical text, a fact which mainly appears in the way he uses the expressive tools. In 1403b of the The Rhetorical Art, Aristotle notes that is not enough to express only the exact content of our thoughts, but it is necessary to connect them with the appropriate expressions. Only in this way the stylistic quality of our text will be achieved. In the speech of Protagoras we identify the following elements which are used according to what he wants to show each time: a) accuracy, b) clarity, c) simplicity, d) superlatives and e) aesthetic quality. The elements are those which Aristotle analyses in the third book of the Rhetoric Art. Finally, an attempt is made to present in which cases Protagoras uses the above mentioned characteristics of rhetorical discourse in a way which is not scientific but is rather superficial.
