4th century B.C. grave stele from Palaia Epidavros

An exploratory sounding in the building lot of E. Verdelis at Palaia Epidavros n January of 1982 uncovered an inscribed marble pedi mental grave stele, dated to ca 370-360 B.C. with the relief representation of a young woman. The stele, in the form of a «naiskos», has side pilasters with plain capitals, architrave and pediment.The figure wears a long, belted, Argive peplos with an overfall and deep pouch, a garment characteristic of peplos-wearing figures chiefly on votive reliefs of the late 5th c. B.C. The linearity and vertical folds of the peplos are characteristic of both Cycladic and Peloponnesian works, but with Attic influence. The mass of the figure’s hair, covering much of the forehead, as well as the treatment of the features of the face, breast and shoulders recall Argive works. The position of the figure's arms are difficult to interpret.The inscription EYAMEPI XAIPE on the stele was incised at a later date, perhaps soon after 200 B.C.The stele was reused a third time, apparently, serving as one of the cover slabs on a built Roman cist grave.
