Abstract:
The icon, which belongs to Mrs B. Papastamos, isdated to the first half of the eighteenth century. It wasprobably painted on Mount Athos, as its iconography isthe same as that of a wall-painting of 1568 in thecatholicon of Dochiariou monastery.Although the iconography of the Sticheron conforms tothat of the Nativity, it is devoid of any narrativecharacter, mainly because of the inscriptions accompanying the figures. The half-turn of His body towards the Magi andthe movement of His arm are exactly paralleled in awall-painting of 1566 at Varlaam Monastery, Meteora,where Christ, again sitting on His mother's lap, isshown reaching out to redeem Adam and Eve.
