Abstract:
This icon -judging by its dimensions (75x586x2 cm) mostprobably a despotike icon - was identified a number ofyears ago in the storeroom of the Archaeological Museum ofKythera and is now on display in the Byzantine and postByzantine Art Collection of the church of the Ascension inLivadi, Kythera.Christ is portrayed on a bright gold ground in frontalposition in the traditional Pantocrator mode. Μπαλτογιάννη, Βυζαντινό Μουσείο, Τα νέα αποκτήματα (1986-1996), Αθήνα 1997,δόσης, εξαιτίας της εποχής στην οποία ανήκει, θα μπορούσε κάλλιστα να σταθεί δίπλα σε έργα των επώνυμων ζωγράφων του 15ου αιώνα, έργα που προσπάθησε να μιμηθεί. Το κρητικό έργο, που ιστορικές συγκυρίες θέλησαν να βρει καταφύγιο στο κοντινό με τη μεγαλόνησο νησί των Κυθήρων, έρχεται να πλουτίσει τηνπινακοθήκη των δύο ομώνυμων ζωγράφων και με τηνποιότητα του να προσφέρει στοιχεία χαρακτηριστικάτης τεχνικής και τεχνοτροπίας τους, χρήσιμα για το μελετητή που θα παρουσιάσει συνολικά τις εικόνες τους.1η Εφορεία Βυζαντινών Αρχαιοτήτωνtorn of the icon we can read the name of the painter writtenin capitals: ΧΕΙΡ ΕΜΜΑΝΟΥΗΛ TOY ΛΑΜΠΑΡΔΟΥ. Theinscription does not bear a date.On stylistic grounds the work is one of the most proficientand accomplished of its kind. Specialists need to study thework in order to establish whether it belongs to the younger or older of the two artists known to us as EmmanuelLambardos.
