Abstract:
The bastion of St. George occupies the middle of the west side of the Hospitaller fortifications of the town of Rhodes. Its complicated evolution is split into five distinct phases: (a) central tower and fausse-braye shielding a gate (ca. 1382); (b) addition of spur bulwark (1437-1461); (c) modification of the spur bulwark and other elements to add strength and firepower (1461-1476); (d) a massive outer bastion with gun batteries and platform that encloses the bulwark (1476-1520); (e) the bastion is consolidated and joined to the wallwalk (1529-1521).
