Abstract:
This paper examines 15 clay ampullae-pilgrim flasks which have been found in the Dodecanese and are deposited in the collections of the 4th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities. Dated to the sixth and seventh centuries, they come from Egypt (pilgrim flasks of St Menas) and Asia Minor, most probably from Ephesos. On the Asia Minor flasks are represented St John the Theologian, Thekla and most probably Phokas, as well as Prophet Daniel, while the rest are decorated with aniconic motifs. An ampulla found in Kos, in a destruction level of the third quarter of the sixth century, is securely dated.
