Abstract:
In the apse of the Holy Forty Martyrs at Chrysafa, Georgios Moschos’ depiction of the celebration of the Heavenly Liturgy in front of a painted altar-screen is an iconographic innovation in post-Byzantine wall painting. On the one hand, it indicates that Moschos was influenced by the manuscripts and icons with analogous themes created by the exceptional artist Georgios Klontzas. On the other hand, it is evident that Moschos’ intention was to renew the formulation of Orthodox dogmas within the context of the contemporary religious rivalry between East and West.
