Wooden Painted Cross from the Church of the Holy Cross in Askas, Cyprus

At the church of the Holy Cross in Askas, Cyprus a wooden cross measuring 110,3×80,9×6,5 cm. is preserved. On the main side, the Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary, St. John, a donor and the altar, are represented. In the rear side are depicted the four symbols of the evangelists and a lamb. A rectangular cavity with a double door is opened on Christ’s face. The cross was probably used as a reli- quary and it was placed at the centre of the church as a special cult object in a specially designed area of the church or even in the Bema. According to the Latin rite, it can also be suggested that it was used as a tabernacle placed on the altar. Based on iconographic and stylistic observations, the Aska’s cross can be dated in the second half of the 13th century and, therefore, belongs to the “Crusader” Cypriot environment.
